| Cardboard Wedding Cake, 1943
During the Second World War sugar was rationed. Wedding cakes topped with icing were hard to come by so imitation cakes were often used.
'The biggest surprise at our wedding reception was this beautiful cake which had been made by a member of of our church who was a baker. But of course the astounding thing was that when it came to cutting the cake he just lifted off the the whole of the outside. The whole thing was cardboard. It looked like a nice cake but it wasn't.'
